Thanks for the Memories

Thank you to everyone who turned out for The Comeback this weekend!

It was so great to reconnect with all the alumni who attended. Things got off to an amazing start on Friday night with The Talkback, powered by PechaKucha. Alumni Association Vice-President David Humphrey started the night by welcoming over 125 alumni “home” for the opening night of the weekend. Emily Carr President + Vice-Chancellor Ron Burnett then spoke on the reciprocal relationship between alumni and the university, and the importance of working together as we plan for the new campus at Great Northern Way. Ron then welcomed the first speaker, 2008 graduate Jason DaSilva. Following Jason, the audience heard from Justine Brooks (’06), Farhez Rayani (’11), Renée Van Halm (’75), David Coates (’88) + Rod Roodenburg (’88), Charlotte Wall (’04), Xwalacktun (’82), Andrea Chlebak (’02) and Jeff Chiba Stearns (’01).

You can view a video of the presentations here.

Things showed no sign of slowing down on Saturday morning when, despite the dreary weather, alumni and faculty made their own sunshine at the Alumni + Faculty BBQ (helped out by hot chocolate and mini marshmallows!). The Granville Island picnic shelter provided some much needed shelter on such a wet and blustery day. A little rain never hindered good times in Vancouver!

Alumni celebrated on Saturday night by joining their peers and current Emily Carr students for a casual night of networking at Bridges Pub at our Industry Pub Night. The intimate gathering allowed for alumni from a wide range of years and disciplines to reminisce, socialize and get to know Capital Campaign Board Members Lynda Brown-Ganzert and Glenn Entis.

There were several other events happening in conjunction with The Comeback. On Sunday, volunteers and participants mapped and rated accessibility in the city at the AXS Map – Vancouver Mapping Day, led by alumnus Jason DaSilva and introduced by Sam Sullivan, MLA, Vancouver False Creek. Emily Carr’s own comic con, Emily Con!, took over the South Building atrium, while our community studio space offered through Continuing Studies, The Leeway, held their first ever open house and art supply sale. For a full list of the activities that took place over the course of The Comeback weekend click here.

Many reunions took place throughout the weekend as alumni got a chance to reconnect with former classmates and faculty. “Why don’t we do this every year?” was the comment most heard and so it’s official: same time next year, everyone.

A big “thank you” to alumna Mari Chijiiwa for photographing The Comeback events. View Mari’s work at:
